Arranging the Ash: Haigata (灰形)

Haigata : Japanese incense ceremony. There are people in the world who do incense ceremony exclusively, study it for many years. I have recently gotten into doing a weekly haigata ceremony. I have put together a boxed collection for each season. It is, in its very essence, a playing with and forming of the sand around which one places incense. Like drawing lines in the sand. Jesus did that when people were shouting alot and angry once. "He who knows enough is enough will always have enough" --Lao Tzu. Knowing when enough is enough. Oft times one half slender stick of incense is enough! It is a fun thing to do, when one has the time. Or to even ponder when one finds oneself in times of contention. Later on in the season, or, more likely at the end of summer, I will do a report on the preparation of sand for placing a kettle on. It is the same process for preparing sand for haigata. It involves copious amounts of tea and must be done outdoors over the space of 2-3 week

2014 Programs : Pottery, Tea Ceremony & Tours.

I'm proctoring my final exams next week and cleaning the house in preparation for small group introductory tea ceremony classes (Japanese and Korean tea ceremonies). Next I found a place that teaches tea ceremony classes using the tea table that is becoming accepted in Japan. Indeed you can find plenty of pictures online of Geisha in Kyoto using the Japanese tea ceremony table. The classes are offered in September but I'm trying to get them to open a class for using the table this summer... Here's hoping. Once this summer I shall also give a tea tour of Nampodong/Gukjae Markets. I shall also be taking pottery classes in Busan's Jangsan area. The Chagama

Welcome to my blog on the Japanese tea ceremony. Having been to a few Japanese tea ceremonies here in South Korea I've decided to learn more and, in time, start conducting my own ceremonies. I've started shopping online for a decent Chagama, an iron water pot. As I hear, a chagama needs to be over a charcoal fire although you can purchase electric elements for them. Shibaihashi Chanoyu supply store in Osaka has some of them on their website. Apparently if it is over a gas fire, it will rust rather quickly.
